Phase Encoding
Phase encoding helps differentiate the protons in each column from one another. To achieve this, a magnetic gradient is briefly turned on, causing different rates of precession across the image.
After the gradient turns back off, each proton has rotated a different amount, and as a result the final phase of each proton is different. This difference in phase helps spatially encode protons on the left of the image to the right of the image.
